Biography

Jimmy first joined Nantwich as a lanky 19 year old from Whitchurch Alport in August 1979. Made his debut in the 1-0 victory at home to Droylsden, 18/08/1979, and netted his first goal in a 3-1 home win over Leek Town in September. Soon after he joined Congleton Town (1979-80:33,6) while also appearing for Whitchurch Alport (1980-81) under dual registration.

Transferred to Oswestry Town from where a £10,000 fee took him to Swindon Town (1981-83:49,10lge) in December 1981 and he made his League debut as a substitute in a 2-2 draw with Walsall, 09/03/1982.
‘Quinny’ was called up for Northern Ireland in 1984, scoring on his debut – a 3-0 friendly win against Israel in Belfast on 16 October. He went on to make 46 international appearances over 11 years. He was a member of the 1986 World Cup squad and his 12 international goals make him the fourth highest scorer in Northern Ireland’s history.

A £32,500 fee took him to Blackburn Rovers (1984-86:83,23) and in December 1986 he re-joined Swindon (1986-87:64,30) for £50,000. A tribunal fee of £210,000 took him to Leicester City (88/89:31,6) and they recouped their money when he transferred to Bradford City (1988-89:35,14) in March 1989. A sum of £320,000 then took him to West Ham United (1989-90:47,18lge) in December 1989 before he dropped down to Bournemouth (91/92:43,19). In July 1992, he took his goals to Reading (1992-96:294,94) with his 34 strikes making him the leading goalscorer across the Football League for 93/94 and he became player Joint-Manager in December 1994. Had an impressive strike rate with Peterborough United (1997-98:49,25) and even laced his boots seven times after returning to Swindon as Manager in December 1998. In all, Jimmy notched an impressive 210 goals in 578 League appearances.
After his League career ended, he appeared for Hayes, Hereford United (00/01:2,0), Northwich Victoria (2000-02:28+28,12lge) and Shrewsbury Town (03/4:8+8,4lge) in the Conference, Cirencester Town in the Southern League and also Cricklade Town and Highworth Town in the Hellenic League. Also appeared again for Congleton Town (00/01:3,1lge) and Nantwich - making his last appearance for the Dabbers at the age of 46 in the FA Vase semi-final at home to Cammell Laird, 09/04/2006.

As well as Managing Reading, Jimmy held the reins at Swindon Town, Northwich Victoria, Shrewsbury Town, Egersunds (Norway), Cambridge United and Bournemouth. He was appointed Manager of Nantwich in March 2011 and guided the club to the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time in its history and to Cheshire Senior Cup glory. However, after a disappointing 12/13 campaign, he parted company with the club in March 2013.
