Biography
Enjoyed an illustrious career scoring nearly 300 goals over 15 years. After starting out at West Auckland, he failed to break into League football despite signing for Arsenal as a professional at the age of 21 and then joining Chesterfield. Served Altrincham and Chester before moving on to Winsford United (1957-58). In December 1960 the inside right switched from Winsford to Bangor City helping them to win the Welsh Cup, scoring in the 3-1 Welsh Cup Final win over Wrexham in 1962. This propelled Bangor into the European Cup Winners Cup, securing European glory with a terrific 2-0 home leg victory over Italian giants Napoli in September 1962.
A woodwork teacher in a Northwich school, he moved on to Runcorn and then played Southern League football with Cheltenham and Rugby Town and in the Welsh League with Colwyn Bay. Signed for Oswestry Town before joining Nantwich in 66/67, finishing the season as the club’s top scorer, including five goals in a 7-1 win at Manchester University.
Converted to centre half for a final season before hanging up his boots at the age of 35. Appointed Manager of Macclesfield Town reserves at the start of the 72/73 season, he took over as first team Manager in January 1974, initially on a caretaker basis. Resigned in September 1974.
