The tie remained evenly matched with no clear cut chances from either side up to the half hour before Nantwich gradually took control. In the first of a number of opportunities for the ‘Dabbers’ CHRIS FLYNN was only a whisker away from a KEVIN STREET corner followed shortly afterwards by STREET himself who clipped a shot from close range narrowly over the bar.

With the opening period moving to it’s closing stages MARVIN ROBINSON might have done better when he found himself unchallenged but stabbed his shot at SOLLITT whilst moments later GLYN BLACKHURST was unlucky to witness his effort whistle past the foot of a post.

Meanwhile, in added time, Matlock carved out their only real effort of note in the first period when their captain STEVE WARNE put in a shot but which fell wide of the target.

HT: NANTWICH TOWN 0 v MATLOCK TOWN 0

GOAL: 65 Minutes. CARTER made a blistering run down the right – ROBINSON rising above the defence at the far post to plant CARTER’S pin point cross beyond SOLLITT to put the home side ahead.

GOAL: 75 Minutes. Substitute MICHAEL LENNON met DAVE McPHERSON’S pass at 15 yards – LENNON on the turn slipping the ball past the Matlock ‘keeper to place Nantwich firmly in the driving seat.

On 80 minutes KEVIN STREET warmed the Matlock ‘keepers hands with a blistering long range shot that SOLLITT just managed to hold. Credit to Nantwich, they put in a workmanlike performance despite not having played since New years Day – ironically when beating Matlock in the league by 2 goals to 1.
